Beware of investment scams, Sun Life warns

Money is hot. Proceed with caution.

This does not mean that you should avoid money. Rather, protect your money by investing wisely on trusted tools that would help it grow so that you can achieve your goals and secure your future.

This is the meat of Sun Life Asset Management Company Inc.'s ‘Slam the Scam’, a multimedia campaign that was created as a response to the proliferation of investment scams in the Philippines.

In the Slam the Scam video series, actor and SLAMCI financial literacy advocate Matteo Guidicelli shows the profile of a scammer and offers tips to avoid being scammed.

Valerie Pama, president of SLAMCI shared that people should check if the investment company is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has all the legal requirements to conduct its business, has a physical office, is honest in its dealings and is trustworthy.

"We hope that the investing public is aware of how to spot these scams so they can opt for legitimate ways to grow their money," Pama said.

A gift of investment

Speaking of investments, buying goodies for our loved ones is also a form of investment. For example, buying a 10,000 worth of Nike shoes. But unlike these retail goods whose value depreciates in time, there is one investment that grows overtime. That's the Sun Life Prosperity Fund wherein you can grow your money from a minimum investment of only P5,000.

Now, this fund can be given as a gift through the Sun Life Prosperity Card. A first of its kind, this gift card worth P5,000 may be invested in any of the peso-denominated mutual funds managed by SLAMCI.

The card is a lasting gift option for birthdays, baptisms, graduation and weddings. The recipient just needs to have the card activated.

To purchase online, click here: Sun Life Prosperity Fund portal. Or you may visit any Sun Life Financial store nearest you - Iloilo, Binondo, Bonifacio Global City, Greenhills, Makati, Quezon City, Cebu and Davao; or talk to a Sun Life mutual fund advisor.

Upon purchase, fill up the purchase form and show one valid ID. To activate the card, fill-up the investor information form, investor profile questionnaire, order ticket, one billing statement and one valid ID.

Apart from the Sun Life Prosperity Card, SLAMCI will launch two dollar-denominated funds to add to its mutual funds and a regular investment program that will be initiated in partner banks. They will also enhance their digital capabilities and strengthen their presence in key cities nationwide./
