Ratsada’s Huesca and Garvilles win SM Super Awards for Media

GMA Iloilo’s Ratsada Senior Correspondent Joecel Huesca and Video Journalist Melvin Garvilles were among a handful of SM SUPER (Salute to Unparalleled People, Endeavors, and Resources) Awardees for Media for their exceptional coverage and courage during  typhoon Yolanda in November last year.  In a ceremony held at the SMX Theater of SM Mall of Asia on May 19, Huesca and Garvilles received their trophies from SM Foundation Inc.

Joecel Huesca
Huesca and Garvilles  were cited for their coverage in Estancia, one of the towns projected in Yolanda’s path. When the devastation began, communication lines went down and trees and power posts fell to the road which led them to be stranded in a barangay outpost.  There, they had to literally sleep beside a corpse to keep safe and had to share whatever little provision they had with other victims.  They returned to the  GMA Iloilo station  after more than 24 hours of being incommunicado, a situation that previously prompted GMA News’ management to organize a search and rescue operation.  During the time they were considered “lost,” the team filed reports that told of the trials and courage of Ilonggos when Yolanda struck.

Other awardees who were also recognized for their tenacity and unparalleled courage were GMA News’ Jiggy Manicad, Love Añover, Micaela Papa, Greggy Magdadaro and Teodorico Solon of GMA Cebu.

Meanwhile, Ratsada is set to re-implement its “Dakop Ka, Daug Ka!” promo wherein loyal viewers who will be ‘caught’ watching the program will be rewarded with exclusive Ratsada baseball caps and mugs. Also, every week, a tablet will be given to a lucky viewer who can send in the correct answers to various questions that will be asked during the show.
