Umami: the fifth basic taste

To further introduce the umami experience to the Ilonggos, Ajinomoto held an Umami Culinary Challenge-Visayas which comprised of culinary competitions, a cooking class, and umami conversations.
The four most common basic tastes are sweet, sour, salty and bitter. But there is a fifth basic taste and this is the secret to why certain food stand out in terms of taste. It is called umami.
Our brain has cells that respond preferentially to the umami taste, thanks to the presence of glutamate receptors within the tongue’s taste cells.



According to the Umami Information Center, umami is a “pleasant savoury taste imparted by glutamate, a type of amino acid, and ribonucleotides, including inosinate and guanylate, which occur naturally in many foods including meat, fish, vegetables and dairy products.”

Volunteering for Ilonggo children with cancer

Did you ever wonder how it feels like to volunteer for a good cause?
For Ike Lourenze Sala and Patricia Solatorio, students from the College of Medicine of Central Philippine University, helping out during the Friends of Cancer Kids (Iloilo) Foundation Inc. children’s day out was a life changing experience.


FCKIFI beneficiaries look forward to the children’s day out because they can laugh, have fun, learn new things and bond with other kids, other families, their benefactors, FCKIFI members and volunteers.
“It was our first time to be a part of something big, something that is life changing,” said Sala. He added that he never knew that he could learn so much from children who were diagnosed with cancer.

SM City Iloilo expansion promises the best shopping, dining and entertainment experience

Iloilo City is indeed bustling with developments such as having new investors, building constructions and business expansions.

One of these developments is the opening of the SM City Iloilo Expansion building last Nov. 20, 2015.
SM Prime Holdings which is led by business tycoon Henry Sy Sr., has invested P1.3 billion for the annex that features more local and international restaurants, boutiques and specialty shops, giving Ilonggos more options for celebrating, bonding and shopping.
From the existing 71,995 square meters and 200 leased units, SM City Iloilo now has four floors of 21,124 square meters and 165 units of shopping and dining spaces. Green organizations gather to strengthen support for EPR bill

Greenpeace Philippines, Ecowaste Coalition, and Medicins Du Monde (MDM) bring together various civil society groups to strengthen the civil society push on the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) Bill on electronic waste (e-waste).
EPR is a policy principle to promote total life cycle environmental improvements of product systems by extending the responsibilities of the manufacturer of the product to various parts of the product’s life cycle, and especially to the take-back, recovery and final disposal of the product. E-waste are electronic products such as mobile phones, computers, television sets, and other electronic appliances and equipment that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete, and have reached the end of their useful life.

Alliance Global Group Inc. records revenues of P99.6-B in the first nine months of 2015

Alliance Global Group, Inc. (AGI) posted a net income of P16.2 billion in the first nine months of this year, on consolidated revenues of P99.6 billion. Net income attributable to AGI amounted to P10.6 billion.
“The group’s financial performance continues to be compelling despite challenges faced by the gaming industry. We are strengthening the building blocks of sustained profitability and shareholder value in the long term,” said Kingson U. Sian, AGI’s president and chief operating officer.

Megaworld Corporation, the country’s biggest developer of integrated urban townships and the largest lessor of office spaces, achieved a net income of P8.35 billion during the first nine months of 2015, 12.52% higher year on year.
