Guilt-less burger: Egg in a Hole Buko Burger by Lars Buko Batchoy

Iloilo - After hearing many good reviews about Lars Buko Batchoy, we finally checked them out ourselves and the trip was worth it.

I would recommend Egg in a Hole Buko Burger. They cut a hole in the middle of a cooked beef patty, placed an egg sunny side-up style in the middle and cooked further, then topped with cheese, bacon and coconut strips. The burger is adequately flavored; neither too strong nor too bland. I think what makes it gentle to my taste buds was the hint of sweetness from the coconut strip.

Now, I also understand why their Coconutchoy with Egg is a best-seller. It is composed of pork, beef and chicken with noodles and coconut strips served inside a coconut shell. Knowing that it is a good balance of meat and healthy coconut, I did not feel guilty eating it. Coconuts, after all, are rich in fiber, vitamins C, E and B, and minerals such as iron, selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous.

We also tried Cocopao. Patterned after our popular siopao, Cocopao is a healthier mix because it consists of caramelized coconut, chicken strips and egg. This siopao with a twist is perfect for snacks, baon and pasalubong.

Lars Buko Batchoy was founded in February 2016 by Larry Abanilla Lao and Primrose Uy. "Prim loves to cook and I love to eat," said Larry. He added that the love for cooking runs in Prim's family. Prim’s grandfather owned Happy Landing, a popular restaurant in the 1970’s.

Lars Buko Batchoy was awarded as Philippines Best Fusion Dish in 2016 by the Choose Philippines Awards because of their ability to combine coconut in all their recipes. They were also featured in Mag Amiga, Sikat Ka Iloilo, TV Patrol, Jessica Soho, Motorcycle Diaries of Jay Taruc and Cream Magazine.

Larry said that they consume a minimum of 100 coconuts in a day. That is already a big help to our coconut farmers. Currently, there are about 179,000 coconut farmers in Western Visayas, according to the Philippine Coconut Authority-Iloilo.
