Learning center helps prepare Ilonggos for disasters

Advanced preparation and knowing what to do when disaster strikes could prevent injuries and save lives. The best time to start learning about disaster preparedness is during pre-school so that even the young ones can be of help to their family.

It's good to know that the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has set up a learning center for this purpose at the Ker and Company Building (at the back of the Iloilo City Hall).

Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Learning Zone

At the ICDRMMO Learning Zone, one will see posters and flyers that provide instructions on what to do when calamities such as a typhoon, flood, earthquake, or fire, among others, happen. There's a table that displays the essential things to place inside one's evacuation kit.

Also on display are the timeline of disasters, photos of the Kabalaka Youth Volunteers' monthly clean up and mangrove growing activities as part of their disaster prevention and mitigation activities and campaign on environmental protection; Kabalaka Tour for Senior Citizens and the artworks of the winning entries in "Paghugpong sa Kabalaka", which highlights the concepts of self-help and mutual help during disasters.

They also feature Kabalaka Camp, which teaches children about disaster preparedness, prevention, and mitigation in a fun way such as storytelling and games. This is Iloilo City's version and adaptation of Kaeru Caravan or Frog Caravan in Japan. This was introduced to Iloilo City through the Community Based Adaptation and Resilience Against Disasters (CBARAD) Project.

What sparked my interest is the Kabalaka Scarf. This light green-colored scarf serves any purpose. You can use it as a tourniquet, hanky, flag, bandana, water filter, wrapper, mask, and hammer, among others.

Would you like your students to learn how to prepare for disasters? You may arrange for a tour. The center has a speaker who will guide your group. They even have a TV viewing area where students can learn how to use the Kabalaka scarf.
