Metro Iloilo Hospital brings joy to kids with cancer

One of a parent's fears is an offspring having a life-threatening disease. So, Melody Hitalia was quite devastated upon learning that her five-year-old son Sander has cancer.

For a family that is poor, this is even harder because chemotherapy is very expensive. That's on top of frequent visits to the hospital for their doctor's consultation and laboratory exams.

Fortunately, Melody was referred by their physician, Dr. Caso to Friends of Cancer Kids Foundation Iloilo (FCKFI), an organization that raises funds in order to help pay for the chemotherapy treatments of its beneficiaries. The group took on Sander as a beneficiary.

That was 11 years ago. Now aged 16, Sander is in remission and enjoying life to the fullest, an opportunity that he missed when he was sick.

"The organization has been a big help to us," said Melody. "The foundation pays for the children's chemo, medicines, check-up, and laboratory. Even after a child gets well, he/she continues to be a part of the FCKIFI family.”

FCKFI relies on the donation of kind-hearted donors to be able to fund these treatments. FCKFI also conducts activities where the beneficiaries and their families can smile, laugh, learn new things and know that there is hope.

Partnership with Metro Iloilo Hospital and Medical Center
There are institutions that also organize events for the beneficiaries in partnership with FCKFI. One of them is Metro Iloilo Hospital and Medical Center (MIMHCI) which held "You Can, We Can" for FCKFI last March 22, 2019.

"It was in celebration of World Cancer Day and was intended to reach out to patients who are battling the Big C. MIMHCI achieved its aim to give entertainment and inspire the beneficiaries to continue on being positive amidst their health struggle," according to MIMHCI's press statement.

The event was opened by Dr. Danilo Encarnacion, CEO and president of MIMHCI. The guest speaker was Atho dela Cruz, a relationship coach, founder of BEHT (Body Emotional Healing Therapy) and L.I.F.E (Life Integrated Field Energy Healing).

The kids enjoyed the magic show by Tito Ryan the Magician.
