Football Para sa Bayan benefits underprivileged communities

All sweat but all smiles, Jan Ray said that he plays football and spend time outdoors because he likes the salty taste of his perspiration. Then he and his teammates laughed.
These adorable kiddos are part of the Maasin Central Elementary School team that joined the TM Football Para sa Bayan clinic, a partnership between Astro Malaysia and Globe Telecom which kicked off in Barotac Nuevo last July 23, 2016.

“Having football in Maasin seems impossible because people there are not into the sport,” said Maasin’s head coach Alan Casianan.
A former football player in Dumaguete, Casianan said that he bought a football and gradually enticed children to love the sport. “Children who strolled the plaza got curious and joined the game. Soon, parents brought their toddlers to the plaza so they, too can kick some ball,” he added.
“Football is important to us. We do not have a football field. So we grabbed this opportunity in Barotac Nuevo so that children will experience it. Each child packed his own …

Ang Kamalig Restaurant’s homegrown dishes

If you were just a kid during the 1980's, then you are probably familiar with Ang Kamalig Restaurant.
It was a very popular Iloilo restaurant back then but it eventually closed. Many years later, in 2015, Ang Kamalig reopened at Atria to serve diners with authentic Ilonggo fare, but with a contemporary touch.

Credits to Chef Miguel Trenas who invited Iloilo bloggers to taste the satisfying meals that Ang Kamalig has to offer.
The following is a rundown of home-cooked style Ilonggo meals that satisfied our cravings.

Named after Chef Miguel's grandmother, Lola Amparing's Crispy Pata is every tongue's delight. The meat is tender and savory and the skin is crunchy. But, do lighten up if you have cardiovascular issues.

Morcon is one of my favorite dishes and it was quite interesting to note that at Ang Kamalig Restaurant, they meticulously mixed ground pork with spam and egg then rolled it with a thin sheet of pork fat, steamed and fried to golden brown.

Spicy Sisig is another mu…

Subaru: Confidence in motion

Safety and performance are the top considerations when buying a car and Subaru, a Japanese automotive manufacturer has been meeting these expectations since  the 1950’s.
“Today, the company is present in almost all countries, most especially in the United States, Europe and Asia,” said Brian Chua, Subaru Philippines vice president during the grand opening of their Iloilo branch.

Lyndon Go, president, said that even before Subaru opened in Iloilo, many Ilonggos already own Subaru vehicles. “There were already Subaru fans who got their vehicles from Cebu and Manila. Coming in, we were able to provide better service,” he said.
Safe Car Chua said that they are very confident with the Ilonggo market. “Subaru is a premium brand and many of our buyers are well-traveled, highly educated and technical people which Iloilo has a lot. The age range of our buyers is from 23 years old to 85 years old,” he said.

Go added that there are Subaru owners who are as young as 18 years old. “They were given as …

Motorcycle safety: full gear vs fool's gear

According to a 2010 report of the World Health Organization, motorcycle riders make up a large portion of those killed on the road. The report added, in "Metro Manila, 34% of all fatal road crashes and 37% of non-fatal injuries from road traffic crashes involve motorcycles."
To ensure motorcycle riders’ safety, we have Republic Act No. 10054, an act mandating all motorcycle riders to wear standard protective motorcycle helmets. Additionally, we have Republic Act No. 10666 or Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act of 2015 which aims to secure the safety of child passengers.

But as we can see, not everybody is complying. From where I live, youth speeding on their motorcycles and unprotected, is a normal sight during the evenings. One instance, I saw a man and a child onboard a motorcycle wherein only the adult had a helmet on.
This calls for motorcycle safety education and who can do this best but the more responsible motorcycle riders themselves.
Recently, Shell Philippines held a…

Gawad Kalinga, Monsanto build homes for 232 families in Sara

If there is one poverty alleviation model that has worked, it is the Gawad Kalinga model which aims to create an enabling environment in the community that it has chosen to develop.
We all know that when people dwell on the thought that they are poor and marginalized, they will continue to act that way.  Gawad Kalinga wants to destroy this  “slum mentality”, a person’s lack of confidence and disconnection from opportunities through bayanihan.

So, Gawad Kalinga sought the help of other organizations in providing land, homes, food, education, health, skills development, social enterprise and opportunities to give care to the community. This is bayanihan at its best.
In GK-Cacho Village, I witnessed how volunteers and beneficiaries mixed cement, did carpentry jobs, painted their homes, etc. In GK Waterfront, I saw volunteers hold values formation sessions among children, teens and adults. Some of them became leaders in their community. Meanwhile, the Gawad Kalinga community in Sooc is now i…
